Beginner’s Guide to Bathroom Tiles

Posted by William Scott on November 17th, 2008

Your bathroom can be a sanctuary from the stresses and burdens or everyday life; a place where you can relax and unwind completely. It is, therefore, of utmost importance that you create a soothing, relaxing environment in your bathroom. This can be achieved by the correct use of tiles. For example, colorful, lively tiles can help to wake you up in the morning and prepare you for you day; and soothing, softer colors will promote a more peaceful environment in which you can unwind before retiring to bed at night. A mixture of the two can provide the perfect setting for either instance.

First Select The Type

You should select tiles that appeal to your personal preference, but they should also be practical. Ceramic tiles are always a very popular choice. Ceramic tiles are non-porous and slip resistant, and they can be cleaned easily - all you need to do is wipe them with a damp sponge or cloth.

Another great tile choice for the bathroom is travertine tiles. Finishing surfaces maintain a consistent look that presents a clean design for bathroom walls and floors. Granite tiles have a high wear and tear threshold. Bathroom floors would be well equipped in a slate tile setting due to its anti-slip finishing surface. For a touch of elegance to a bathroom, consider using marble tiles in a floor or wall design. Glass tiles are a great way to create stunning accent pieces around a tiled wall or in a unique mosaic design.

Determining The Look

Before your bathroom remodeling gets underway, ensure that you know exactly what you want. Once a tile has been cut, it obviously cannot be put back together. Large tiles can be used to create a dramatic look and feel for your bathroom, provided that you do not have to make a great deal of cuts. Medium or small tiles are usually used in small bathrooms or to create imaginative designs around the bath, sink, or toilet.

Tiles come in many shapes and sizes; including squares, hexagons, rectangles, and octagons. There are also many types of accent pieces that you can use to spruce up your bathroom, such as triangles, diamond shapes, and narrow rectangles, amongst other shapes. Your color choice is also, as mentioned above, vitally important. Colors such as peach, yellow, and red radiate warmth and coziness, while softer colors like blue, green, and violet exude serenity and tranquility. To create a feeling of spaciousness in your bathroom, it is advised to use white or beige tiles as the main tile.

Now Decide The Layout

Visualize how you want your bathroom to look. Using the same color tiles and grout can produce quite an eye-catching effect, while using contrasting tile and grout colors makes the tiles more noticeable. Create interesting patterns by using different size or shape tiles.

A combination of small hexagon tiles and large square tiles is quite popular. As is the practice of accentuating the main tiles using smaller accent tiles as border pieces. Scattering different colored individual tiles randomly amongst the main tiles is also a very attractive and popular design.

With so many colors, sizes, and types of tile available, it can be overwhelming to pick the perfect pieces for that desired bathroom creation. Bathroom tiles are readily available in virtually any size, shape, and color possible. The only limitations are what the mind can create.

Part L of the Building Regulations Harnesses High Efficiency Boil

Posted by Tal Potishman on November 17th, 2008

Part L was introduced as part of the 2005 Building Regulations and it set a new standard with regards to energy efficiency. It called for all new boilers installed or replaced to meet the required standards for achieving high efficiency rating. Boilers such as condensing and combination (also known as ‘combi’) boilers which use extra large heat exchanger or a secondary heat exchanger qualify for this requirement. By extracting the heat from previously expelled gases, the high efficiency boilers reduce the required fuel to generate the same about of heat.

This new requirement raised the bar not only in terms of energy efficiency but also in terms of the quality of the service and installation. Since the systems are more integrated and work off each component more closely, it requires the system installer to have deep understanding of the power demand, both input and output of each component (such as the boiler, the heating controls, the radiators and the hot water cylinder).

Industry research calculated that since the introduction of part L of the building regulations, the savings of carbon emissions made by the UK domestic heating market have been substantial. Recently conducted research puts the amount of carbon emission reduction at around 2.4 million tonnes. The researchers further calculated that if the industry did not apply the new Part L requirements, and continued installing SEDBUK D rated boilers, the carbon emissions from domestic heating would have grown by over one million tonnes since 2005.

At current levels there is still large potential for reducing the carbon emissions generated by the domestic boilers in the UK. There are around four million old boilers which are significantly less efficient than modern SEDBUK A rated boilers. Replacing such old boilers with an A rated boiler can reduce carbon emissions by around 30%. Each home in the UK produces an average of 5 tonnes of CO2 per annum. Across the whole population, domestic heating accounts for around 16% of the UK’s CO2 emissions.

The government is attempting to encourage carbon reduction within the domestic heating market. It has introduced zero stamp duty on carbon neutral homes and requires all home sellers to produce a home information pack which includes a detailed energy performance certificate. However, the stamp duty waiver will not apply to the vast majority of the old housing stock which is where most of the carbon savings should be made. The shortcoming of the home information pack is that it only applies when the property is put for sale, and does not encourage improving the heating efficiency at other times.

There are several alternatives to adopt that can further reduce the carbon emission resulting from domestic heating within the UK. The most effective among them is the application of renewable energy technologies, such as solar water heating. If just 10% of the new homes that the government plans to build between now and 2020 adopt such technologies, it is estimated that around 150,000 tonnes of carbon emissions would be cut on an annual basis.

The government applied a combination of carrots and sticks to force the domestic heating market to reduce its carbon emissions. The plumbing and heating industry is largely keeping up with the trend with many companies investing in training and professional development on renewable energy technologies to address any market need in those areas.

Sun’s Energy - Sustainable Fuel for PV Solar Panels

Posted by Tal Potishman on November 9th, 2008

Solar Photovoltaic (PV) panels are designed to absorb the sun’s energy and then use that energy to power your home or office building. They use a sophisticated structure of silicon wafers which react when light photons hit them and become chemically unstable. This reaction releases electrons in one direction and protons in the opposite direction which eventually leads to an electrical current that can be then fed into domestic or commercial uses. Solar PV panels are already used commonly in calculators and watches and now the larger panels are becoming very popular among people who are looking for alternative methods of powering their homes and office buildings. Several large organisations are big supporters of solar PV, including the National Grid that has been getting some of its power from solar photovoltaic panels.

Solar Photovoltaic Planning and Regulatory Issues

Solar photovoltaic panels can be installed on the roof, along a wall of the property or as standalone systems. Before buying and installing the panels, however, it is essential to make sure the user understands the installation regulations in the local area. Most domestic installations in England have been cleared for solar PV panel systems and English homeowners can also install the panels as standalone systems, so long as they meet certain criteria (namely avoiding conservation areas or listed buildings). In Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, the local governments are still working out the relevant laws. In most cases it is wise to check with your local authority before commissioning the installation of the solar cells.

Reasons to Use Solar Photovoltaic

There are several important benefits to having solar PV cells in your home. The most obvious benefit is the ongoing savings on the electrical utility bills. In addition to saving money, the user will be lowering their carbon footprint as solar PV emit virtually no carbon dioxide and cut around 1.2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year. An indirect benefit is the fact that the user will no longer be tied to the National Grid which means that they do not have to worry about power cuts or increases in the cost of electricity. Solar power makes a strong economic case for properties in remote areas where there is no coverage by the National Grid (e.g. remote farms, research facilities).

How is Solar Photovoltaic Cell Installed?

Solar photovoltaic cells need to be installed by a professional installation crew. Professional installers must be certified by the Low Carbon Buildings Programme. It is not recommended to try and install the solar panel cells unless you are fully trained and qualified. The cells are typically very heavy and they have to be attached to a separate support system that must be constructed and attached carefully to the roof. A professional installer will understand the local electrical and safety codes and can ensure that the solar PV units are meeting the requirements of the code.

As time marches on, the world becomes more determined to find alternatives for electricity that are not reliant upon fossil fuel. Of the various alternative energy options (solar, wind, wave, hydrogen, nuclear), solar power is considered to be one of the most viable. Every day, domestic panels become more affordable and more popular, helping with the general battle with climate change and global warming.

Forget White Van Man - Modern Vans are Finally Raising Standards

Posted by Tal Potishman on October 29th, 2008
by Tal Potishman

In the past your plumber’s van was something you would rather not see. An old and rusty van (normally a Ford Transit) with a dents and scratches that made it look worse than it really was. These days, plumbers’ vans are a far cry from that old picture, offering highly sophisticated kits, comfortable cabins and a wide variety of mechanical options. Competition in the commercial vehicle sector has pushed up standards and variety, offering the driver high levels of comfort and attention to detail.

Modern vans offer car-like comfort along with work-focused measures such as space, ruggedness and durability. They are available in various sizes, from 3 to 17 cubic meters of loading space, and can be customized to meet the plumber’s specific needs. Most vans now offer at least one sliding door (some offer a second sliding door as an option), offering excellent access to the loading space.

A buyer can determine whether they would prefer a tailgate or double rear doors. Another interesting recent option is a reduced opening angle for the cab doors, allowing the driver or passengers to grab the handle in its fully open position and reduce the risk of heating the wall or other objects nearby.

Diesel engines account for the vast majority of commercial vans sold in the UK currently. Diesel engines are successful since they offer a combination of fuel efficiency and high torque in low revs which is important to the trade (especially for towing heavy loads). Diesel engines have made major steps forward recently in the passenger cars group which migrated to the commercial vans side. These include smooth and quiet operation, coupled with high fuel efficiency, high reliability and longer lifetime for the engine.

Diesel particulate filters now remove carbon particles from the exhaust using physical filters. This improves the quality of the fumes and reduces the amount of carbon being expelled from the engine.

Common rail systems have done wonders for the diesel engines in recent years. Similar in many ways to direct injection systems in internal combustion petrol engines, the common rail system has improved diesel engines’ smoothness, softened their noise and vastly improved the ride quality. Other important benefits of the common rail systems include better performance, improved fuel economy and increased torque output.

A new system is being introduced by some auto manufacturers which injects fuel at high pressure levels into the combustion chambers of the diesel engines. Several new vans are offering this technology which offers higher efficiency and engine flexibility.

Modern light vans are now sold with gear boxes offering five or six gears. This improves the ride quality, offering a smooth ride. Some vans are now offered with automatic or semi automatic gear boxes, which are winning hearts on the highly congested UK roads and town centres.

Most modern vans now offer creature comforts that were not available even in luxury cars only a few years ago. Air conditioning, cruise control and satellite navigation are either standard or available as options. The quality and smoothness of the ride has also improved a great deal making long journeys feel less tiring.

Van manufacturers have also stepped up the level of safety features to bring vans in line with passenger cars. Most vans now offer a driver’s air bag, and many offer other air bags as options (side and curtain airbags). Other modern safety features include ABS (Antilock Braking System) and ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme). Both of these electronic features are effectively active guardians that would correct the vehicle direction or breaking in case of skidding, or breaking in wet conditions.

This creates an incredibly relaxing sensation that you should definitely experience!

If you prefer invigorating showers over long soaks in the tub, then here is something that’s a must-have in luxury bathrooms. The steam relieves muscle tension, joint fatigue, reduces stress and cleanses skin impurities. Most steam showers offer temperature selections that range from ninety to one hundred and twenty degrees timers for the length of time that you want to enjoy the steam option. Steam showers have come down significantly in price and are the same size as traditional shower enclosures. If you really want to go all out, some steam showers come equipped with a radio and telephone, a remote control, as well as connections for your CD player.

Towel warmers are definitely required for a luxury bathroom. Lower-cost towel warmers cost as little as $100-$150 and are superb for homeowners who need to remodel a bathroom on a budget. However, they’re often equipped with very light chroming or lower-quality materials that will wear off over time. You also cannot control the degree of heat that the unit emits. Luxury towel warmers are priced at $1,500 to $5,000 and offer elegant designs. These towel warmers are usually constructed from solid brass and come with warranties of up to five years.

Before you start designing your space, define what luxury means to you.
